To be fair, “good at writing romance” is a more common skill than “good at writing sex.”

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, I'm not sure I agree.

Very often (kinks aside), and mostly because the actual mechanics don't vary much most of the time, sex is generic Tab A into Slot B.

Good romance otoh, requires characterization and a sense of pacing, and to me that's FAR rarer.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree with that, because a lot of what people consider "romance" in writing is sex. Romance novels are sex. Romantic erotica is sex. Romance writers mainly write sex, or stories that lead to sex, where people glance at each other, find each other hot, pine desperately, drama happens, sex. It's not personalities or connecting on any intellectual level that are the draw between those characters. They're usually not even distinct characters beyond tropes. You can find-replace names and nothing matters.

But they can write pretty good sex. Lots of people can.

. . . Maybe this is one of those things where my perspective was massively skewed by being in the My Little Pony fandom. They have so, so many writers who write good romance with no sex in it.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering it's a kid's show, it probably lends itself to that better.

Think about the mainstream when you consider "most people" though.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I agree, either. They both have their respective challenges, IMO.

I fucking love sex pollen fics, so +1. I should go write some more. For science!

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
It’s really a higher calling. I support and encourage you in this important work.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the majority of het fic IME is about an OFC, or a reader insert, or maybe a canon OFC making it with the generic big hulking dreamboat bad boy badass of whatever the canon in question is

So I guess I'm just not seeing what you're seeing

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Does your fandom have no canon female characters in it?

I like a good "aliens made us do it" fic. For some reason it appeals to me more with m/f too, even though in general I like f/f more.

I miss the prevalence of arranged marriage fics because I adore unlikely couples shoved together who decide to give it a go at making it honestly work and slowly falling in love.

I never cared about the sex aspect lol.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE aranged marriage and fake boyfriends (I just putting that into the universe) fic and I lament there is none in my current fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-07 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I love sex pollen fics. But I love them for being a way to make two characters who are deeply in love but just as deeply in denial have hot, frantic sex. Sex pollen fics where the characters aren't already in love before they get dosed just aren't interesting to me.

Same with arranged marriage fics. I love when the characters agree that it's a legal marriage and nothing more, and agree to stay out of each other's way and make the best of things...and then end up falling deeply in love with each other involuntarily, while angsting about the fact that the other has made it very clear that they're not interested in any of that.

So basically, I like the opposite versions of the same tropes, lol.

YES THIS INJECT IT DIRECTLY INTO MY VEINS

Yes, exactly. In fact, I don't think I have ever read one of these fics that was actually simply about het PWP and none of that mushy love/romance stuff. I'd argue that it's hard to find a GOOD one of these without those elements, in fact. By definition, het PWP doesn't need plot, after all.

Tropey recipe fic is what you need when your spot for tropey recipe fic really itches. It's a natural thing. I remedy with older fic; tumblr can' help you with this I'm afraid.

Sex Pollen >> A/O

That's all I have to contribute.

+1000

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
exactly what I came to say

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This!

I will forever have A/B/O for making sex pollen fics less common. A/B/O is sex pollen + gender oppression, which is not what I'm looking for when I want to read a sex pollen fic.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
What sort of arranged marriage fic have you been reading that doesn't involve marriage?! Also, not that I've read much f/m arranged marriage fic, but I'd guess that producing an heir (aka a baby) isn't an uncommon motivation for said marriage.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-04 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lately I've been hanging out with fanfic exchange writers and Arranged Marriage and Sex Pollen are still super popular with this crowd.

So just check out the tags every so often on AO3 and get your fix. A marriage exchange is running now, so soon there will be all the arranged marriage and fake married etc fics.
