It's fine as long as they don't portray fangirls as geeky or awkward or otherwie different from your normal average person. I hated SPN ep, I hated Sherlock's fan with that scarf. Like I don't mind media about fans, Dramaworld was ok, but don't make me embarassed for being a fan and don't go all - haha slash girls pervs loosers.

Most fangirls are geeky, many are awkward, and there's nothing wrong with any of that. If you're embarrassed to be a fan, then that's your problem.

NAYRT but it still should be done with, you know, respect and empathy. It's not that hard to tell the difference.

geeky people can look nice, don't have to be awkward. The contrast with movie!pretty is especially jarring. And you know, bad stereotypes.

I didn't say that I'm embarrassed to be a fan.

With a lot of geeky people you don't even know their interests, because they're just like everybody else.

That's like saying The Bug Bang Theory us an accurate portrayal of male geeks and scientists because a lot if them are like the main characters.

If you mean the one with the Supernatural play, none of them were particularly geeky, awkward, or otherwise any more 'different' than any other private school drama girls. And none of them were 'perv losers'.

If you're talking about the episodes with Becky/the Supernatural convention: Becky started okay but then got gross. The rest of the fans were fun and pretty on par for people at a convention.

So....you do you.

NAYRT

The SPN convention episode was borderline, to me. I could see how it would bother someone. There's a lot of the episode where it's laughing at, not laughing with. But I think it ultimately ended up in a good place with the ending. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for romance, lol

SA - forgot to add: I can also understand why someone would not be inclined to give the episode the benefit of the doubt, given what the show does with Becky later on.

Yeah, they fucked up Becky, but good, which was too bad.

It was a little over the top, sure. But most people have no idea what conventions are like, or what goes on at them, so playing up stereotypes is pretty par for the course. And if you watch con vids and whatnot, well...a lot of it's not far off.

It was good that they had an out, happy, gay couple, even though people got all twisted about Dean being taken aback...by a couple playing him and his brother and being a *couple*. I don't think that's being 'homophobic' in the least, but you can't please everyone.

Yeah, I've been going to cons for more than 20 years now and there's a huge amount of truth to a lot of the stereotypes about people in fandom being awkward nerds with no social skills. Obviously not everyone is like that, but enough people are that it's not like they're pulling something out of thin air.

Exactly.

Re: Acknowledgment of Shipping

(Anonymous) 2019-06-03 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's not always even a case of no social skills so much as it's a case of fandom-specific social skills that are largely based on memes and in-jokes and come off as super-awkward to people who aren't in fandom. And sure, a lot of us know how to switch social skill sets where appropriate, but a whole hell of a lot of us do not and/or have widely differing ideas of where the social boundary line is. Honestly, a lot of the backlash against things like the SPN fandom episode reads as embarrassment at being caught out. It's like SPN fandom's mom found their AO3 profile and lashed out about how awful mom is and also AO3 isn't meant for people her age anyway.

I agree but again, I still think there's a difference between portraying it sympathetically and portraying it like a freak show.

it was a slash fan. Idk what episode, I don't remember specifics. I think there was a fan meeting or a convention.
Also some girl obsessed with Sam.
And there were some book fans.

I thought the SPN fans depection was universally hated, at least among the people I spoke to before, so it's nice to see a different view on it.

There are some issues, sure, but overall, the 'Supernatural fans' on the show have been fine.
