The vast majority of memes about Dyatlov refer to the HBO series, and specifically, to his fictionalized persona. Most of them have nothing to do with the actual historical person. There is a distinction between the two.

While I don't ship them at all (I'm too busy being horrified at the real life events as shown and talked about in the podcast, to treat this mini as a usual fandom thing), but... how is this different from people shipping them? They're obviously doing it only for the portrayal of the pair as "those two guys" in the HBO series, so it's also a fictionalized persona. Or are people angry just because Dyatlov WAS a jerk -according to real life accounts- AND was pretty much the cause that Chernobyl was as bad as it was, if not of the actual meltdown, so it's easier to uhm... "disrespect him"?

*whispers* It isn't different.

Most of the fandom seems to understand the distinction when it comes to the memes, but is losing its shit over the shipping.
