I suppose it can be tough if the character you hate happens to actually have some good chemistry with the one you love. And maybe, by having the character you like spend time around the one you don't, there's some hope and chance that the latter could improve as a person/character as a result?

But even then, yeah, I still don't think I could do that, either. I want to like both characters I'm shipping.

I ship characters I sure wouldn't be able to stand in real life. So in that sense, I hate that character, but I might enjoy a ship with them in it. Especially if the other half of the pairing is one that would metaphorically slap some sense into the first one in a believable way.

Maybe that's what they mean?

Do people actually do this? When I hate a character I can't ship them with anyone, let alone with a character I actually like.

Yes, people actually do this. It's so strange to me too. If I hate a character, I hate them.

I do that sometimes. I view the hated character as an AU version of this fic's universe. I do it with Tom Riddle, a MCU character that I shan't name, Trigun's Knives...

As a Stony shipper, I find myself wondering this quite a lot, when I look for fic and see all the Steve-bashing Stony fic out there. And it oddly seems to only go one way. I don’t think I’ve ever run across a Tony-bashing Stony fic. I mean, it’s one thing if you want to put Tony with someone else (such as Strange) because you hate Steve, but why do you still want him with Steve if you hate him so much?

This has always baffled me. Stony is probably the worst case of this phenomenon I've ever seen, but I think they ship it so they can use Steve as a blank slate whose only character trait is being obsessed with Tony and have him be the big strong daddy dom who can either heal or abuse Tony with his cock. It's all projecting.

Oh yeah, I’ve seen this crop up a few times over the years and I never stop being utterly baffled by it. When I ship something* I have to at least like both characters or think they’re a good match otherwise I won’t care for it at all.

*exceptions being if it’s a fucked up ship then I won’t think they’re a good match per-se, more that they have a dynamic I find interesting.

I've had this happen to me once, and it was a case of me liking the concept of the character and the ship but hating the way that it was executed in canon. I would have liked the character a lot if canon hadn't leaned so heavily on certain tropes for them that it overshadowed all of their other, more interesting personality traits.

Basically, the character had the potential to be really interesting, but canon bungled it.

My last two fandoms had the two most popular ships be one where one half of the ship was always getting bashed or villified in fics and it just... confused the shit out of me.

I think this was a comment I made at some point? Thank you for bringing it to life, comment-secret-creator. ♡

I've never actually seen this but maybe it's love-hate feeling on the part of the author? The cliche is that hate is closer to love than you'd think
