What exactly was the gravamen of the responses? I don't even really get how that could be genuinely controversial.

IIRC, it wasn't. Ayrt didn't like the original illustrations, but most of the people in the thread did. I don't think anyone was nasty about it, though. Ayrt might be reacting a little sensitively to being the minority opinion.
