Yes! There's a lot I miss about those times.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Time only runs one way...

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It actually doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that image supposed to explain the difference between nerds vs geeks because I'm even more confused now than I was before.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nerds are dicks and geeks bite the heads off live chickens? Wait, wrong definitions. Idk.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like most people would say that nerds are generally more socially awkward than geeks so I get that aspect of it.

But it also reminds me of the way that some people get a superiority complex over one way of doing fandom and being a "true fan" or "true geek" or what not, and I really hate that whole idea. It's so immediately toxic. On either side, really. Anytime it goes beyond just annoyance and preferences, it's very frustrating.

I don't think that's what OP is talking about, though. I think OP is talking specifically about the fact that blogging has become less of a nerdy past time. Which I agree with, and it's a shame.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
SA - That said, the image is a little self-contradictory. :/

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, sorry, I'm not talking about the OP when I say that by any means, just the image. The image does make me a little confused about what OP really means by "nerdy" (which is a word I think is confusing in general) but you're right about what they meant.

And where do dorks stand?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Dorks can get right in my bed, please.

+1, Star Wars/superheroes vs Star Trek? Huh?

The webcomic Cat and Girl had one of my favorite takes (though people seem to flip on which is the “bad” term):

new anon to this thread

See, now I'm even more confused because Klingon is on different sides in the image and the comic...

I always refer to this video whenever I get confused about the differences between geeks and nerds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tvy_Pbe5NA

THANK you. Even LJ lost the nerdy. It's ironic to me that as a kid the internet was the one place I could be a nerd, yet now I often feel the same awkwardness and frustration in online spaces that I felt in high school.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-08 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, comment OP, what’s the difference between nerds and geeks? I know you probably had nothing to do with the image selection for this secret, so I dunno if you agree with its definition. Do you mean you miss when people online were more socially awkward, or what?

this entire thread makes me think I don't fit with nerds or geeks any more than any other group. :(

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
the main thing I'm getting from this is that "geeks" are smug arseholes

I miss raw unbridled enthusiasm in fandom, be it for the canon or for fan works, which doesn't seem as prevalent anymore. Sometimes I'll scour Livejournal's archives a full decade back and am always blown away with how different the 'mood' and 'atmosphere' of fandom was years ago - there was a whole other level of passion that I don't see often anymore on sites such as Twitter.

I don't think those are far enough apart for that to be meaningful.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
There's just way too much overlap between the two, unless your specific definitions are something different.

According to Dictionary.com:

nerd
1. a person considered to be socially awkward, boring, unstylish, etc.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit

geek
1. a digital-technology expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often used disparagingly by others).
2. a person who has excessive enthusiasm for and some expertise about a specialized subject or activity
3. a peculiar person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual, unfashionable, or socially awkward.
