138. Agreed!! A fan of a genre isn't a fan just because they read one book or watched one show.

Perhaps, but there are crucial elements, prototypes if you will. Asimov is one, Ellison another. Media SF may be fast-lived but B5 is a fucking milestone. You're, of course, the owner of your opinions, but if you've never seen it, you don't know exactly how much you're missing.

I have seen it actually, and so I know what people would be missing, and that's their loss, surely? Don't lose respect for them as a person, because they haven't seen it. Ever thought they couldn't afford the boxsets, or can't borrow it from anyone, or don't want to illegally download it? Not everyone is gungho about breaking copyright laws ya know.
And I wouldn't say B5 is up there with Asimov, nor a "fucking milestone", nor is someone a lesser fan or person, because they haven't read or seen a certain thing. They may not have access to that particular author or show. Stop being an Elitist about it! Give them a chance! There's a difference between not being able to watch something and not wanting to watch something.

138 OP

I like being an elitist.

I'd give them a chance, I'd lend them my DVDs for Valen's sake, but there is a sizable portion of media SF fandom who doesn't *want* to watch it, not even a couple of episodes to get the feel of it. Those people inspired the secret.

Also, have you read much Asimov? I admit to not knowing the whole canon, but from what I read, I would put Asimov very much in the same class as B5. They both have their faults, but they are prototypes of their genre and they should be seen to really be able to develop the genre further.

I'll admit, I've not read much Asimov, something I've yet to get around to, but still being in my early 20's, I've got plenty of time, and reading it now means I'll appreciate it more than if I read it in my teens.
I still believe you can't disrepect a person because they don't want to watch something you hold on a pedastal, and that's my main annoyance here. I can agree to disagree on how important we view B5.

Dude, I can disrespect a person for the clothes they wear, for the way they vote and the things they like to watch on television. That may not be a very nice thing to do, but it certainly is my privilege.

And let me tell you, using the phrase "agree to disagree" is one of the things that will make me respect you less.

Like anyone should care what an obvious dick like you thinks.

I could say that ANYONE who hasn't read Stranger in a Strange Land, I, Robot and the Rama series isn't a "real" SF fan, or worthy of respect. Heck, if I wanted, I could make the same case for Frankenstein and Jules Verne. (Read any Jules Verne lately? No? Busy watching TV?)

But I won't, because it's more fun to introduce someone to something they haven't seen or read. And if they aren't interested in it, well - saying, "I lose all respect for you, then," definitely isn't going to change their mind.
