Although I agree that the actually work itself can't get you anything in the "real world," it's hard to deny that it is wonderful writing practice that can easily become something.

Wouldn't you say that Wicked is just glorified fanfiction? I would. I would also say that it is "something of consequence." (The moral of that statement: Find a really, really famous work of literature with an expired copyright, choose a character, fic it, make a lot of movie, get it turned into an award winning musical.)

Or you could just alter the names/places/events in your fanfic and transform it into "something of consequence."

I'd say that Wicked is glorified fanfiction, but I wouldn't say that it's something of consequence... well, maybe the book, but I personally found it too pretentious and I approached it as if it was fanfic, and it annoyed me that the author spent most of the book disregarding/reinventing the world in such a way that it seemed as if he just attached Wizard of Oz to it to make it sell better. The musical eliminated that issue.

It is so pretentious that it boggles the mind (but I enjoyed it when I was a pretentious 15 year old)

Nuuu! Musicals are supposed to be intellectual. T.T It's this generation's need for 'spectacle' that's ruining Broadway, in my opinion. But that's another story....


I loved the Wicked musical! It was damn-right entertaining, at least. I boo at the haters!

Well I agree that the Disney-ish musicals fail at life and all that; but you cant deny that some of the more classic musicals are fairly ridiculous as well.
