I thinik you also neglect to consider that fanfic is judged by different standards than original fiction. You have less control and are expected to relinquish authorial control when you're writing fanfic. You're working with a template, and while you can get a feel for things, it's never going to be the same as sitting down and creating something entirely from scratch.

My main point was that on the definition of 'real' writing. Even with original writing, there are people who don't consider sci-fi or fantasy to be "real" writing and I tend to get a knee-jerk reaction whenever someone tries to define any sort of writing as "real" since that value seems to be highly subjective. I think so long as it's written, even if it's the laziest, trashiest thing ever written, it should still count as writing.

So someone like, say, Norman Davies didn't do *nearly* as much work as an author who made up their own war...?

I wrote a 25,000-word story spanning almost twenty years in the POV of an original character, who was the child of two canon characters. It's set a few years in the future, so none of the events in the story took place in canon. I borrowed the canon characters but had to extrapolate how they would respond to circumstances different from any they've ever been in before.
My sandbox in a fanfic. I designed it with the toys I wanted to borrow in mind, but it was still my own creation.
PS. My main fandom is a TV show. Do TV writers hired after the pilot count as developing original creations? They didn't come up with the concept of the show, the setting, or the main characters.
