But that doesn't change the fact that you, as the OP just said, "skip all the hard shit." I don't think it's fake writing, but that's a semantic argument, really, and I think the point is that it's not serious writing. The thing is that while the two are different, it isn't on the same level as an original piece. It's like making a painting from scratch and doing a colour-by-number. And... that's fine. I don't see why anybody would have a problem with that.

You know what is "serious" writing and how is that any different than the term "real" writing, which I find is just as dubious as "real" writing? All either of those distinctions make me think is that a piece of writing only has real value if you can sell it.

And I don't you can put them on a level of well this is "superior". I also think that OP and the secret are making a judgment on it by attributing fanfiction to laziness because laziness to me means someone is taking shortcuts to accomplish something, but fanfiction writers are not necessarily lazy and not writing fanfiction out of laziness.

That's not true. Going back to my art example, there's a difference between doodling and sketching for fun and then sitting down and doing observational studies or finishing a painting, whether or not you try to sell it. I think that fanfic can be used as serious practice for some people, but the fact is that by definition it's a hobbiest's pursuit and is not a serious practice.

It's "superior" in that you have to do more work to produce a good work of original fiction, usually. But really, who cares? I don't think they write fanfic out of laziness, I think they do it for fun. And there's nothing wrong with fun, unless you hate fun. It's sort of apples and oranges to me. Would you pick on someone who builds models because they didn't go into architecture?

I still semantically don't like that distinction, because people can take hobbies seriously in that they will work to refine that hobby.

I don't know why we are going on about this when I agree that they aren't comparable, which is really my main point, the thing is people like the secret maker and whatnot are comparing the two and are equating that all fanfiction writers need to do is be "more serious" and write original fic. Because that is the offense in the secret, and that is what the equating fanfiction with laziness is doing.

I guess I just don't understand why it's offensive. why bother getting offended over someone who clearly misses the point entirely?

OP here, I didn't say anything about you being lazy, I just said there was a lack of character/context development.

Bzzt. Wrong. When writers such as myself include multiple OCs in a fic, (myself using upwards of 20 in an epic), you do need to develop these characters in such a way that they will be accepted by whoever read it, and it's a lot of effort needed to make them believable. I myself will spend days researching before I publish a chapter to make sure that I get everything right. No, I don't mean researching canon, I mean going to 4 sites finding out what the marriage customs are in modern China, as well as Japanese divorce law, and how long a flight from Hokkaido to Guizhou would be. Yes, I develop canon characters as well. So please tell me what it is exactly that I am bypassing.

Blanketing all the writers based on the few fics you've seen (I'm trying to assume you've glanced at a few, because if you haven't, your statements mean even less to me than they do now) isn't very becoming, since I know that if you came up to me and said it to my face, based on the more than two years I've spent writing the one I'm writing now, I'd have to resist the urge to backhand you.

And to the "something of consequence" part: This would be better suited for saying to someone who plays video games. Fanfiction can be used to hone skills and maybe a career one day, as well as building up a thick skin to criticism. I see less of this with the hobby of gaming.

It's not like there aren't "serious" works of fiction out there that have built upon already developed characters, plots, and background stories. Hook, Wicked, and probably thousands more.

If you're reading a fic with lack of character/context development, find yourself a better written one. It's true that a lot of fanfiction is general with characterization/development, because some authors figure that the readers, who are already familiar with the characters and story, will fill in whatever is lacking with their knowledge. But not ALL fanfiction is like that. There are writers who really pursue presenting the truth, and will put everything into getting as close to the truth as they can get with their writing. Non-fanfiction writing is the same. That's why I don't think either is superior.

I have found AMAZING character and context development in fanfiction. You just have to look for the good ones.
