not op, but 179
Re: not op, but 179
Um... your icon is really captivating. :P
Re: not op, but 179
And yeah, fanfiction can really overdo that kind of thing. But I think Remus has something that Severus doesn't in terms of reasons he might NOT be bookish - he's friends with James and Sirius. They both claim not to need to do much (if any) studying, so I get the feeling they find book learnin' somewhat pointless and the more valuable skills being ones that they are naturally adept at. Having very active/social/non-bookish friends would have been some encouragement for Remus not to spend all his time reading.
Severus, on the other hand, was very unpopular and evidently a very good student, judging by the amount of writing he was doing on his exam. Not that being bookish makes one unpopular, but it appears that the only other acceptable past-time in the wizarding world is pulling pranks or playing Quidditch. I can't imagine he was very athletic because all of JKR's athletes gain some level of instant popularity for being on their house teams, so what else does Severus have to do with his free time but invent spells and read? I think the implications early on were that he was bookish, though we didn't get really concrete evidence for it until later on.
Ugh, wtf am I so rambly for tonight? Yikes, sorry, lol.
Re: not op, but 179
I think you're quite right, too. I always pictured Remus as bookish, but it might have been because he was friends with James and Sirius - when I'd read about them together, I remember thinking how different Remus was from them, so it might have been the contrast between them that made that connection for me. In fact, I think I kind of forgot how close the three of them seemed to be, and now what you said does make quite a bit of sense.
Haha, and I highly doubt Snape was athletic. That would certainly be

I personally think that Remus was probably significantly more bookish than the other two. Not necessarily because he had some great love of reading, but he would have been more aware than the two of them that you can't take your future for granted. They were both rich kids who got by mostly by riding on charm and looks, or at least that's how they seem to be represented to me in the memories of them. Granted, those memories were them at their worst, but I think it's safe to say that at least up until OWLs that was probably the case. Remus may have come from a family of wealth, but it doesn't seem terribly likely (although I don't think he would have been impoverished while he was at Hogwarts - his financial situation as an adult was based on his inability to keep a job because of his condition/discrimination which wouldn't have been a factor for his parents if they provided for him through his schooling), but more than that, as a werewolf he would know that he couldn't really depend on people liking him or helping him out just because of who he was. James and Sirius would have been a lot more naive at that age than he would have, and I think Remus would have worked much harder in his classes as a result.
And they are definitely represented as being very close, but I actually found the memories a bit disappointing in that they don't seem to be as close as I'd imagined them. There's a distinct disconnect between James and Sirius, and Remus and Peter . James and Sirius speak to each other as though they're equals, Sirius doesn't speak about Remus as an equal as he makes light of his condition and says he "wishes it was the moon" because that would alleviate his own boredom, even though it would mean Remus being very ill in the days preceding and probably injured in the days after. And since this took place after the Werewolf Prank, it seems that even after that big mistake on Sirius' part, he doesn't appear to have realized how serious Remus' illness actually is. And Peter's treated like a complete fanboy (though he kind of encourages that, considering the totally absurd applauding and all). When Remus talks about the Marauders, it's them as The Best Of Friends. When Sirius talks about the Marauders, it's them as Sirius and James. I was disappointed that there wasn't more a sense of community between them in the scene, and that they treated Peter so badly (because with that, it's not very surprising that he betrayed them for someone who probably promised to treat him better and give him better social protection to boot.)
As for Snape being athletic, yeeeeah. If he was a teenager in present day, and I saw him, I'd assume he was a gamer nerd, lol. The only light he sees coming out of his computer and the only exercise he gets walking to and from the kitchen or bathroom. Though, he must have a working knowledge of Quidditch or he wouldn't have been able to referee that one time. And, he does seem to have very good reflexes when he's duelling, and apparently is competent with flying on a broom or without, lol. I just can't imagine he was ever much of a team player or that he ever found sports fun.
