The Good Place is pretty popular from what I've seen. It's just not "ship two hot white boys together" popular.

The only things from the past 3 or 4 years that are popular in the way that you're pointing to are K-Pop bands, I think

I see a flaw in your theory.

Comedies just don't seem to create the same fandom urge that other types of media does. Some things just seem to hit that urge more than others, and comedy appears to be one of the things that doesn't. Personally, I only rarely watch comedies. Then again, How I Met Your Mother had an active fandom, and so did Big Bang Theory (though for me only one of those was any good). So not sure why The Good Place doesn't.

I think it's partly that people are intimidated by writing comedy, yet writing fic that doesn't have at least a strong element of humour for a comedy fandom seems wrong.

The Good Place is pretty popular with people who read Eliezer Yudkowsky and talk about “AI risk.”

Really? Yuk! I didn't think the basilisk people would be into a show that emphasises kindness and working together.

Grim though Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is, The Good Place seems to be popular with pretty much everyone who's interested in philosophy or academic theology, regardless of where they're coming from philosophically.

By "grim" did you mean cringeworthy?

That too.

I'm not much of a fan of The Good Place anymore. Eleanor has become some sort of karma houdini which is the complete opposite point the shows been trying to make. Between that and forcing her and Chidi's relationship, I've lost interest.

I love The Good Place. I didn't expect it to go so serious on a couple of themes, I thought it was just a cute comedy when I started it. But it works.

I'm glad it's ending though. I feel it was always hard to top their season 1 twist.
