I don't know. That element is definitely *present* in the original stories so it's not totally preposterous to me. It's annoying that people have apparently decided that they need to pick one specific angle on Holmes instead of letting him be multiple things at once, but at the same time, I think he is a difficult character to really adapt well and this is an obvious dramatic hook.
