Common (or less common) Spelling and Grammar Mistakes That Bug You

(Anonymous) 2019-06-13 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This post brought to you by the extreme prevalence of people who end every speech bracket with a period, even though they should very often be using a comma instead.

Not claiming I have perfect SPAG. I don't. I'm just always kind of baffled by how common this particular mistake is, when it's not even a particularly difficult punctuation rule to master.

Ooh, I hate that too.

My vote is for people mixing up weary/wary. I've even seen this on news sites. (Granted, it was Polygon, or something of that ilk. But still.)

Yes! I hate this one.

Also while not incorrect I guess, "on accident"; it's by accident or on purpose.

Canon/cannon (especially headcannon)
Couldn't care/could care less

Ahh, the canon/cannon one gets me too.

Literal headcannon is my new favourite headcanon.

"I" when it should be "me"! argh!

"loathe" when it should be "loath"

It's not commonly used in speech or modern talk ("I am loath to...") so I understand why people want to put in "loathe" instead, but it bugs me so much. I see it used incorrectly more than correctly.

Huh. I always get that mixed up and have to look it up every single time and still feel like I'm getting it wrong.

My pet peeve is when people mix up stuff like bath/bathe, lose/loose, breath/breathe, etc.

So many.

Not capitalizing correctly in dialogue:
Wrong: She said, "this is a mistake."
Right: She said, "This is not a mistake."
Right: "This is also fine," she said, "since it's a continuation of the sentence before the speech tag."

In dialogue, punctuation belongs inside the quotes.
Wrong: She said, "Not like this".
Right: She said, "Like this."

Discrete/discreet - it is nearly always going to be discreet, given that discrete means separate or distinct, while discreet means prudent or unobtrusive.

It isn't use to, it's used to.

Personal pet peeve: textspeak. I really don't care if it's realistic to have your characters use it. If it's just a few lines, that's fine, but if you've got a lot of texting in a fic, using all textspeak is as annoying to me as spelling out an accent.

Faze/phase really bothers me for some reason.
