the part of fandom that you and I are in, and that's the focus of this website, is hugely focused around shipping, yes. but, one, there are huge other swaths of fandom for which this is not a true statement. and more importantly, that's a descriptive statement and not a normative one - in other words, simply because our part of fandom is centered around shipping, that doesn't make other kinds of fandom wrong.

The first two fandoms I were in were much more canon-centric. Although I have to say, ever since leaving them/they changed, I've realized they're rarer.
