Most kids probably thought the same thing. I don't remember that part of that movie, but Siam and Siamese were outdated names for the country even back then and kids only knew them as words for cats. The Siamese cats in Lady and the Tramp had the same effect on me. I didn't see caricatures of Asian people because I didn't know they were supposed to be, I just saw funny cats.
