I have my own problems with RENT, but the idea that RENT is a distinctly bad show because "the characters are horrible" doesn't make a lot of sense. The narrative frame is a knockoff of 19th century tragic opera. Bad life choices and tragedy porn are baked into the genre. If that's not your cup of tea, Mamma Mia! is a good choice. It's arguably a better musical, although it's also based on flawed people and questionable life choices.
