He was added. He wasn't in the book story. But in the book, Gandalf already knew about the Necromancer and who he actually was. He just goes off at one point to deal with the Necromancer and we don't see him again for a while. This wouldn't work on screen. They had to show the battle on screen, and they had to show Gandalf finding out about the Necromancer.

That being said, the jokey way they did it was unnecessary and stupid. The idea was cool, but the execution was not.
