I seem to recall the book being pretty clear that turnips were a particular favorite of Carrie's, and you know, people have different tastes, some of them weird. Plus the context of that mention involved the family being seriously worried about Carrie being sick and malnourished after the Long Winter. Probably fresh turnips were very good for her.
