I agree with the basic gist of your comment, but it's still true that many of the people clamoring for "representation" actually mean "their OTP".

I once commented in a Teen Wolf discussion that canonical Sterek would be great, but so would a canonically bi Stiles who dated some other guy on the show, or canonical Scott/Isaac. And my comment got slammed with downvotes from fans who'd previously been arguing that Sterek would be amazing for representation, but who refused to acknowledge that other ships involving the fan favorite character (Stiles) and/or the actual main character of the show (Scott) would be no less amazing for representation.
