130. Anthony Bourdain? Really? It's not the age thing, I would just be afraid he'd critique me in the bedroom or something, and then I'd have to flee, crying.

138. This secret really bothers me. I hate the homophobia that gets buried in slash. "We're not gay, we just love each other." I'm not saying people can't be bi, but there's nothing wrong with them being gay. Especially if, you know, they're having sex with and falling in love with people of their own gender.

146. Agreed. Claudio is an ass.

Agreed so hard. I don't think two people falling for one another are necessarily gay either, but there was something awfully defensive and uncomfortable about that secret.

To the OP: if someone's interpretation of a fictional relationship bothers you that much, the problem may lie with your own prejudices rather than with the person who's getting you all riled up.

but there was something awfully defensive and uncomfortable about that secret.

I think the fact that s/he said they wanted to "throw up" at people talking about them being gay. Which sounds like, "Aw, they are cute...ew! Don't call them gay! Gay makes me nauseous. They're love is above that."

I'll give the secret poster the benefit of the doubt and believe the nauseous reaction is to the stupidity rather than the gay. :D

I think this is they overlying effect of a general social attitude that 'gay' must be a prescribed identity, and with that, there's the fear that being labeled as gay, or as indeed any sexuality, denotes an inherent change of identity or personality.

For some people, "gay" is a part of their identity, and for some, they feel uncomfortable saddling themselves with the baggage that comes with that term, which they feel is not and should not be regarded as an inherent factor to their personality. And then there are some people who adopt that label because they feel it edifies their identity. The "I'm not a Christian; I just love Jesus" kind of situation.

(Lol @ your comment to 130)

You put it far better than I could.

Re: 138

I do understand that sexuality and identity are complex issues, and that it's not as simple as saying "You love someone of the same gender, therefore you are gay," although society pretty much does just that. It's the way this secret (and other people I have seen making statements like it) stigmatize homosexuality. Usually while deriving entertainment and titillation from homosexual situations and relationships.

Like I said, it bothers me.

Thanks for replying thoughtfully. It always makes me feel more hopeful when I see non-confrontational, non-wanky replies and debate.

That's a good point; kind of mirrors the 'guys don't like lesbians; they just like lesbian porn' argument. I think that perhaps this secret and the general attitude you're talking about may come (in some incidents) from the issues I mentioned previously. The characters argue with themselves "I'm not gay; I'm just me." And the authors or fans may resonate with that, because they feel that declaring the character to be gay would be a misrepresentation due to the isolated relationship. But alas, I'm repeating myself.

I also love reasonable wank-free discussion. It is ever so pleasant. :)

Is that icon from some show? If so, which one? For some reason the "secrets of the universe" sign intrigues me...

It's from the movie UHF. If you enjoy absurd humor, you might give it a try.

Weird Al Yankovic? I must see that. Thanks! :)
