143. Okay, I'm trying to suss out at which point you think Zutarans don't accept that it's not canon, and how that's different from shipping anything. I mean, in slash and non-canon shipping, you ignore the canon pairing to have it. That's just what happens.
If you mean the insistance that it made canon-sense...well, it did. In theory, it could've worked very very well. But so did Aang/Katara, and hey, let's give the plucky, well-developed hero a bit of happiness, shall we?

146. This is not news. As far as I'm concerned (and I'm a Shakespeare nut), whoever his primary couple is...they're always a couple of tools. Claudio/Hero, Romeo/Juliet, Lysander/Hermia (Demetrius/Helena was just beautifully psychotic), Miranda/wotsisname... I think he did it on purpose for the lols, really. It's really hard to play romance straight, so make your straight men losers, and make the side-characters the shiners.

181. Aw, that picture. I've never been to a con, but in a weird way, that pic captures "Con" so much more than all the cosplay pics you see. And it makes me miss 'em so much. Man, there's nothing like a con, and the end of it's always so bittersweet.

So basically we just demean Katara into a piece of meat to be won? A prize for Aang?

What? Oh geeze, be more wank-baity. Honestly, if people immediantly jump on that interpretation for things, it seems to say a lot more negatively about their perception, really.

It's not about having a "piece of meat," it's about having a relationship. A lot of the Zutarans, myself included, consider the relationship between Katara and Aang to smack more of a maternal sort of love, because Katara is a very maternal figure, and Aang is basically, usually a child. But by the end of the series, he's matured enough for it to be plausible, to me, anyway, that he's earned the ability to have a relationship on a different level. Most twelve-year-olds? Not so much.

Yeesh. Take some chill-pills, man. It's shipping--it's not SRS BSNS, and it's not a rallying cry for the wanky kind of feminism. You make the rest of us look bad.

I'm not familiar with the Avatar fandom, so look at the hardcore Harmonians for an example--the ones who declared the Harry/Hermione were obviously going to be canon in the end, and all the development of Ron/Hermione was just shippers imagining things, and that JKR obviously doesn't understand her own characters. Fans like that tend to give all Harry/Hermione fans a bad name, even the ones who just enjoy the pairing in fanfic, or wish the pairing was canon but recognize it isn't. Which sucks for the sane Harry/Hermione fans.

Hm. Well, I'm in both fandoms, so I can see the similarities and the differences. I'm not a Harmonian (I would've been happy if the trio had remained nice, platonic friends), but I remember being surprised when I found out people really really thought that was going to happen, because R/Hr was painfully obvious to me (emphasis on the "painful"--it was like watching a trainwreck. Did Not Want, but knew it was coming). Actually, I still wonder about Rowling's understanding of her characters, but not because of the shipping. But at any rate, Harry/Hermione never really seemed hinted at.

The first bit of real interaction we have between Zuko and Katara involves Katara tied to a tree, Zuko holding her necklance over her throat and whispering in her ear. (It's also one of the first episodes I remember seeing, so I just assumed that was supposed to be the pairing). The writers of Avatar...well, some people say they were mocking Zutarans, but I think they were honestly being nice to us and giving us little gifts to make up for the fact that it wouldn't be canon. In one of the joke-shorts made called "School Time Shipping," Aang, Zuko, and some others are fighting over who will take Katara to a school dance--and she decides to go with the Blue Spirit, Zuko's alter-ego. Another joke-short has her getting hearts in her eyes and declaring how cute tiny-Zuko was. And then there was the cave scene.

I don't know, it's late and I'm rambling, but my point is, unlike Harry/Hermione, there was a long time when I honestly thought that Zuko and Katara had as much chance, character and storywise, as Aang and Katara did. Probably because the show kept taking every expected convention and pulling something out of left field that surprised everyone.

Definitely the feeling I got as well. Who was actually paying attention to Hero/Claudio when so much Beatrice/Benedick goodness was there to be had?

Yeeeggzactly! I think that's why Claudio and Hero were so lame--to completely contrast the fire and vim of Beatrice and Benedick. Oh man, only, like, my favourite Shakespearan couple (or at least that's canon. Poor Lancelot...)
