The examiners' office indicated that it believed Ledger's death was caused by a gradual build-up over time of the prescription drugs in Ledger's system rather than a sudden binge.

The drugs are the generic names for the OxyContin painkiller, the anti-anxiety drug Valium, Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a widely used prescription painkiller.

A spokesman for the medical examiner would not say what concentrations of each drug were found in the actor's blood, or whether one drug played a greater part than another in causing his death. "What you're looking at here is the cumulative effects of these medications together," she said.

The actor's father, Kim Ledger, confirmed that it was the combination of the drugs rather a particularly high dosage of any of them that proved lethal.

Conclusion? By "abuse" they don't mean he was POPPING PILLS, they mean he had been taking drugs together that built up in his system and should not have been used for so long TOGETHER. Drugs that he was taking FOR HIS HEALTH. Dayam, I'm not even interested in all this crap and I know that. Research Moar.

Thanks for getting out that article. I'm not very interested in this whole thing but from the beginning people latched onto the drug abuse quotes, when clearly a bit of outrage at the prescribing doctors and the pharmaceutical industry was called for instead of blaming the man who'd just *died accidentally*.

S-same. I'm not too into all the news and everything- it's a horrible shame that he died, and I'm sad about it, and feel bad for his wife and daughter- but I still can't stand it when people latch onto one little detail about something and get the ENTIRE THING wrong because they don't bother to look any deeper. Argh.

I don't know if the perscribing doctors could really be blamed even- at least not to a great extent, since the drugs might even have been compatable at their perscribed doses, but I know at least with sleeping pills you have to take more than usual after a while because it starts wearing off. Drugs like that are daaangerous, though, even if most people don't think of them as such, and... ugh, hearing about someone taking even perscribed meds makes me so nervous now. >:

Technically, even one of the prescription drugs he took could have serious side-effects, together they could be hella dangerous. We just don't know. There is hardly ever enough research into drug interaction, because that would be time and money intensive and the pharma industry likes money way too much. Uhm, I may have unresolved issues there ...

Personally, I am very, very careful with my drugs. When I'm on anti-depressants I usually stop taking my birth control pills (which I only take for hormonal balancing anyway, being both gay and perpetually single). I don't like testing drug interaction on myself, really.
