These characters you name all have their merits and potential. We can't read the production team's intentions, so saying "she was only there to do this/that" is hard, because we simply do not know.

I think much of the bad reception certain characters got is indeed indicative of an underlying stereotyping, not just by the writers, but also by the fans.

These characters you name all have their merits and potential. We can't read the production team's intentions, so saying "she was only there to do this/that" is hard, because we simply do not know.

Fair enough. I shouldn't claim to know the creator's intentions. I can however read what actually happened with both Yaeko, Simone, Charlie, and Caitlin - their relevance to the plot was to be reminders of a tragic romance. Whatever the writer's intentions, they repeat the same cliches over and over.

I agree! In some fandoms (like Dexter), I place most of the blame on the fans. But Heroes has a huge amount of sexist and racist stereotypes. I'm not too fond of the "Matt in Africa" plotline, since it's basically a Magical Negro rehash, without even specifying where in a large continent he is.
