Or they write something great, finish it, and take it offline after a month so they can file the numbers off and try to get it published.

That's been a common problem in the Clexa fandom, as I know of several authors who've published thinly-disguised "original works" after search and replacing the names.

They're at least better than Cassandra Claire, who built her empire off of plagiarized fanfic.

The amount of published books that have come from Twilight fanfic is truly astounding.

I work in a library, and for awhile there I would make a game of guessing which of the new books that came in were originally Twilight fanfic. Despite avoiding the fandom like the plague, it was surprisingly easy to do.

how are all these people getting their tweaked Twilight fanfic published when it's so hard to get published in the first place? what publishers are accepting them?

With how huge Fifty Shades of Gray was? Every publisher.
