I can't remember if they were wondering about any deeper meanings, but having seen some of the questions people ask Gaiman, I think you might be giving them a little too much credit. Lots of people just fire off dumb questions without thinking, just because they're curious, but not curious enough to Google it. Or they want the time and personal attention of the author, so they'll ask them whatever.
