I was lucky enough to attend the Final Fantasy VII orchestra concert in LA last week. I know some of it was nostalgia speaking, but it was just so amazing to hear Uematsu's work on the orchestra. Truly breathtaking.

See, and for me, VII was actually one of his weaker overall soundtracks? But there are definitely some stellar tracks within it. I feel like VII's soundtracks encapsulates that sort of frustration I have with Uematsu on the whole; despite having some genuinely amazing songs in there, I don't feel a cohesive theme in the soundtrack in its entirety.

I feel like he learned his lesson a little bit with VIII and IX's soundtracks, where there's more of an all-encompassing feeling instead of relying on individual songs; VIII especially weaves Julia's theme/Eyes On Me throughout important moments, changing its style and feeling as necessary, so it feels like a more complete story musically. Does that make sense?

Haha, I disagree, VII is my favorite soundtrack of his because most of the tracks are just so good. The other games have pieces I love, but a lot of dull stuff in-between. For VII, pretty much anything is a win for me. But I guess that's what you're saying about weaving in certain songs to have repeating musical motifs - for me, that can work, it's just I'd rather every other song have some flavor, too.
