I know there was an episode of House where something similar happened, although I don't think it was exactly that.

I remember the House episode. The guy sold his house and did a bunch of other stuff he never would have done, and then he tried to sue Wilson for telling him he had terminal cancer when he didn't (though later it turned out House had put him up to that.)
