I think a lot of this could be addressed by giving them more lines on the show that clearly indicate this isn't what they always looked like.

I cringe a little at Famine being black, but if they had more throwaway lines about that time Famine was Irish, or Ukrainian, or North Korean, that'd fix a lot. Or War reminiscing fondly about Empire and being British or Roman or Inca.

Drive it home that "Pollution, for now, is this, and this is the current era we're in, and she used to look English back in the Industrial Revolution" would be pretty cool.
