she was probably trying to avoid the controversy of publicly choosing a political side in this extremely polarized atmosphere. the best way to fight the Nazis is to take their money and donate it to support lgbtq communities or civil rights movements (assuming the Nazis actually spend money on her music or attend her shows) without having to make it a big public spectacle.

attacking people like her doesn't help anyone on any side and i say this as a 'blue-blooded' progressive.

Criticizing her and going hey we this seems calculated isn’t an attack. It’s a genuine point. If you’ve ever followed TSwift’s career she has a history of doing this. First with feminism. Now with the LGBT. The LGBT are well within their rights to go “um hey we aren’t something trendy you can slap on to sell a song?”

I mean if you support her good for you, but to dismiss LGBT people’s valid complaints about her is tone deaf and people love to bring in whatabouism with “well why aren’t you getting angry with nazis/conservatives/alt-righters?” As if that has anything to do with Miss Swift herself.

1) don't care for Tswift's music and I don't support her

2) i didn't dismiss anything nor did i say anything about where you should channel your anger instead

I know you're pissed. I'm pissed too. I'm pissed off every single day over what's happening to my country. My point here is that we can be pissed off all we want but losing our self control to anger Does Not Help Anyone. It's not helping you right now. In fact you come across as frothing and nuts, or possibly even a troll, when you pull assumptions out my comment that I did not make. That's how bad it looks. It's just not helping, period. You can be critical of someone and discuss your viewpoint without attacking everyone who responds to you in ways that are respectful.

I'm also saying that we can't expect some celebrity whose job is to make as much sales as possible to bear a torch for any purpose. The only thing they can be relied on for is whatever entertainment they're marketed to provide. They're not trained to be leaders.

NAYRT

I would, personally, disagree that the best way to fight Nazis is to be apolitical and donate money to good causes - I think that publicly denouncing Nazis would also be a good, morally upright, and effective way to fight Nazis and to use her platform. I think that's effective, and I know it's hard for people and it's complicated and people don't want to give up their money for it, and I accept that's the reality. But I do think that it is what people should do.

But even if you disagree, you say that celebrities' primary job is to sell as many records as possible, not to take moral stands, so why are you so offended at people pointing that out? If you say that they can't be expected to do anything but shift units, what's so wrong with with saying celebrities shouldn't be given cookies for it? And how much credit should we really give her for "wanting to avoid controversy"?

I didn’t make any assumptions. You straight up said “people are attacking her and people like her” and I said being critical of her intentions is a totally valid complaint. You’re implying people shouldn’t question her motives or point out that it’s shady because she’s just a celebrity doing something good. Which cool. She is doing something good. But the problem is she gets soooo much publicity and people act like she’s done so much for gay rights when all she did was pay some lip service when she has the money and means and reputation to do more.

I also wasn’t saying you specifically were using whatsboutism. I meant the general you/people in general love to derail with why aren’t you getting mad at bigots who aren’t gonna change as opposed to why are you frustrated with TSwift who can do better and probably wants to do better but she won’t if all she gets are yes men with no crotical thinking. It’s more helpful to ask her to be better than yell into the black void of bigots who already wrote you off and won’t change.
