Ehhhhh... up until a point, maybe. When a book is adapted to a TV series or movie, hardcore fandom isn't their target demographic because that's far too small. They want a more mainstream audience, and the people who read/write fanfiction aren't necessarily representative of a mainstream audience.

Also think about some of the weird headcanons and OOC fics that exist for every fandom of significant size... just because someone's a fan doesn't mean they have a good grasp on the characterization. Quite the opposite sometimes.

Very true, but generally, in my experience, there's one or two ideas fandom seem to latch onto regardless of if they're based in fact or not. By all means I'd be cringing all the way out of a show if the actor overdid it, but just being aware of it, and subtly mind you, leaving an easter egg or two along the way might add some nuance to the show/character. But a lot of that is wishful thinking on my part I'll admit...
Honestly a lot of my opinions drastically differ from popular opinion, I have whiplash from a fandom I got into recently where I literally have no clue where any of the fandom opinion came from;; so I completely get where you're coming from. It doesn't help most of my involvement in fandom is through fanfiction;;
