Er, I assume you're more referring to the Lifetime remark which I also agree was stupid. But as far as "non-male leading characters", I'd say it's completely fine with wanting that too but I also don't see why every show has to have female leads. One of the things I love about Supernatural is that it's basically a m/m buddy show. There are recurring characters of both genders but the leads are just the two guys. I love male/male buddy shows but we don't really have them anymore and instead have tons of ensembles instead or even the male/female buddy show. Which are fine too but I need my m/m buddy show fix. I don't think every show out there has to have both male AND female leads. I think more variety is good. Some shows can be ensembles with both male and female leads, some can be buddy shows with two guys as the leads, or buddy shows with a male and a female lead, or a buddy show with two female leads. Plenty of room on TV for all of that.

Dude, nowhere did I say every show has to have both male and female leads. But a show that doesn't even try to have decent female characters, nor treat female characters with the respect it affords its male characters, is not helping anyone.

Male viewers, on the other hand, have the luxury of sitting back and waiting for male leading characters/buddies/wtfever and getting them all the time. To be presented with a show that not only has a lack of strong female characters but treats the scant female characters that do exist, in such a crappy way, is a double-whammy against female viewers. This is part of the reason complaints in SPN fandom exist like this. Yes, there is room for better TV all around, but that doesn't stop people complaining when the "room" gets taken up with shows that by and large reinforce the status quo.
