Because I really don't have to overanalyze to go "hey, Dean, slapping a chick and then dropping money on the table is treating her like a whore, and also not okay." It's sort of... obvious to me. And I will note that it was obvious when I talk about the episode afterwards.

I enjoy television because usually the idiotic sexism either a) isn't that blatant or b) is mitigated by the main characters not being one one-dimensional caricatures. (generally enjoyable caricatures, to be fair, but not enough so that it distracts me from the constant blatant sexism.)

*not the person you were talking to*

WHAT THE HELL? Dean slaps a girl and drops money on the table? I'd heard Supernatural has some shocking sexism in it, but that takes the cake. And people complain when others don't just ignore sexism like that? That's nice. As long as those people ignore it if some man slaps them IRL and drops money on the table in the same way.

I can't believe there isn't more complaining about that show.

Yep, in the first episode of this season, the main character slaps a woman twice, stands up and drops a five dollar bill on the table. People who don't see sexism will point out that she was a demon-- while I have issues with the slapping, I think the last bit crossed a line.

Uh, yeah, and I'd be one of those pointing out that she was a demon so I guess there you go. I see a difference between him going up to some girl in a diner and doing that compared to him doing it to a demon who is railing on him about hell which he JUST got out of.

Re: 103

That might make sense on the surface of the argument - but, the thing is, physically she's a woman. The actress/host/etc is human and we all know that, and what viewers see and hear is a woman being treated like that. It doesn't actually make a difference. He could have insulted the demon in a way that didn't refer to the body she was in - but he didn't.

The same argument goes with those shows with aliens where the aliens are all of one race, say, black, and those characters are treated with shockingly bad racial stereotypes and so forth. "But they're aliens, it doesn't count!" is what people might say, but the reality is that we're not seeing aliens there - we're seeing black people getting that treatment. I don't think people are bright enough to be able to seperate fiction from what their eyes really see.

I see a difference between him going up to some girl in a diner and doing that compared to him doing it to a demon who is railing on him about hell which he JUST got out of

Nope. That doesn't add up. Those are different situations entirely. If you're using that comparison, it'd have to be compared to him doing that to a woman who's railing on at him after he gets out of hell, or him going up to a demon in a diner.
