Silly me, I just took it as an indication that Meg before her possession was a really conservative dresser.

How does Meg dress in this episode? Because the comment really only makes sense if she's wearing a full-length dress or something. I mean, seriously. Jeans and a t-shirt are slutwear? Well, then sign me up for slutitude, I guess it's time to go out and bang every man I can get my greedy mitts on!

The girl Meg possessed was dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of fashionably tight jeans. The flashbacks to Meg showed her wearing her usual leather jacket, tight jeans and a not-all-that-much-more low-cut shirt than Ghost!Meg wore, and a tank top in another flashback. So basically, not really much of a difference at all.

So... the writers just like calling women "sluts"? FUN!

Could be, and you're free to interpret it that way. In fact, you're probably right.

However, for me, it was an indication that SPN's bizarre compulsion to call women sluts has not gone away the way of the dodo, and even if I went back to watching it again, I still would never be able to enjoy it like I did the first two seasons. So tonight I'm going to be watching CNN between commercial breaks (and when CNN makes me feel less angry and sad over a TV show, things are screwy).

I know it's been said before, but...I just haven't noticed a lot of women being called names. Demons, yeah. Not women. Except for Bela, but if she'd done to me what she did to the boys, I'm sure I'd have used a few choice words in expressing my anger about it.

...I think we totally had this specific discussion before! XD

...entirely possible XD

This conversation has been had before, you know. And you're not going to get people to agree that demons =/= women, when the only demons who have had those sorts of slurs used on them were in women's bodies.

As has been said before, everyone would be furious if Dean called a demon who was wearing a black person's body a "nigger". Just because you consider "bitch" and "slut" more acceptable doesn't mean they aren't slurs used for an entire segment of the human population.

I don't know. I kept trying to look at it that way, but the outfit wasn't really selling the point. I think they might even have been wearing the same jeans. Quite frankly, when they flashed between Meg and Ghost!Meg, Ghost!Meg was showing more skin.

Point. But she was wearing a lacey blouse, not a tank top. I mod [livejournal.com profile] modest_style, and while Meg the human did wear jeans...one thing I've noticed in that comm is that while the Jewish and Islamic women have a set of rules they follow, the rules for Christians vary a lot. There are a lot of Christian groups in which the jeans and a blouse would be fine but a tank top or bared midriff is never fine. idk. Christians run the gamut from "no shorts or tank tops" to headcoverings as a sign of submission to men and long dresses to the ankle at all times. Clearly Meg wasn't a part of that latter group (and they tend to NOT be feminist) but I thought she might have been from one of the "no tank tops, bare midriffs or shorts" schools of thought. (For that matter, Mormons have those rules.)

I don't think Meg looked very "slutty", and I'm a person who almost never wears pants in public and would only wear a tank top as underwear. But I try and look at what characters say as a point of characterisation, not a comment on the writer (because I hate it when people assume I believe everything my characters, esp my OCs, say).

I think where it lost me was that in taking what she said as a point of characterization it really didn't make sense (unless you're willing to go to the religious angle, which I just couldn't without more information), or at least it didn't make me like Ghost!Meg all that much. The only difference between what Meg wore and what Ghost!Meg wore was that Meg wore tank tops more often, and most times that we saw her she was wearing that leather jacket over it. It's one thing to decide for yourself to dress modestly, but to decide someone else is dressing like a slut because they're wearing a tank top (putting aside the fact that Meg was in Ghost!Meg's body) is a dangerous and offensive proposition in a world where we still have to deal with rape victims defending themselves because of what they were wearing. (God, that sounded heavier than I wanted, but ... *shrugs*)

I do get where you're coming from, but the line just didn't sit well with me at all considering there really was no reason to go there.
