Surprise homophobia is never fun. I was taken aback by a friend with a gay sibling, who she loves and is very close to saying that her attitude is like the Bible "love the sinner, hate the sin". I didn't even know what to say to that, but in hindsight I think...

* What a shitty, condescending thing to believe
* The Bible says to stone homosexuals, so that's the kind of shitty advice nobody should listen to
* WTF kind of person still has such a closed mind about someone they grew up with and love dearly

We're still friends, but not as close as we were because I'll never forget she said those things.

that's the attitude my parents have as well, and they think they are open and accepting. Not out to them, so they have no idea I'm bi. But I have a pretty good idea how they'd react if they found out.

Yep. My friend truly believes she's a good Christian and a good person and that the "love the sinner, hate the sin" is the compassionate, kind attitude to have about gay people.

The Bible also says not to eat shellfish or gravy, and to stone adulterers. Funny how some folks pick just the few bits they want to get into High Sniff about, isn't it?

Yep. That's why I'm an atheist.

Ha! I should clarify that I was raised in a Protestant religion, not terribly hardcore and the people were nice. It was the Christian fundamentalist movement that really put me off it... and maybe partly the fact that very few of the "nice" "good" Christians told them to sit down and STFU with their toxic bigotry.

Here's the funny thing that fundamental Christians just love to ignore: Jesus died on the cross as a way to alleviate all mankind of their sins. It also meant all the old rules went moot. And the main thing Jesus said was "don't you fucking dare judge people, only my dad can do that, learn your place you assholes" and that's more important than all that old testament gibberish.

Honestly, the ones I've debated love the whole "old rules being moot" thing because it means they can eat shellfish and don't have to worry about wearing fiber blends, etc. But at the same time, they hang onto the hatred of homosexuals thing just for shits and giggles.

And they use Paul and his letters as the reason to still classify homosexuality as a sin. Paul, the late life convert who lived after Jesus and never knew him personally.

Yet divorce, which Jesus specifically denounced, is fine and dandy.

One of the many reasons I'm not a part of any organized religion at the moment.

we've been friends for ages and i like ger a lot and her kids but that comment just totally blindsided me. she said that if it were me bringing a girlfriend (i am more or less ipenly bi) it would be ok bc it would be me. but all other gay people are "disgusting". yeah. right.

Ugh. I see that happen a lot with racists. They have one POC friend who's cool, but somehow the little light bulb never goes on where they think oh, wait, maybe it's not about skin color at all...
