I have never read the book but my bestie is obsessed with all of Gaiman's works so I had a ...I guess more working knowledge than most people? It absolutely came across to me that the Them were not filled in enough as whole characters in the mini-series. Pepper stepping up to kick ass and save the world yes but the boys.... Adam had tortured them, basically, but hey all good let's go risk it all to do this thing over here! I feel like a few more scenes spaced out across the episodes or even a change in narration from God might have helped that final confrontation on and push the humanity aspect, and how it is our choices ect, on. I know a whole rivalry was cut and yeah just...I can see why people think it became just the angel vs demon show when that wasn't what it was meant to be at all.
