Honestly any time someone mentions her irl I make a face and someone asks why and I have to be like "oh she was big in HP fandom and was a huge dramallama and it's a travesty"...................but I was never in HP fandom and just repeat secondhand stories I've read.

fantastic writeup of plagiarism discussion

I wasn't really into HP at the time (I read the books when the films where coming to an end) but the wank was so prolific I was aware of her.

A couple of years ago I read a write-up of everything that went down and I was shocked at exactly how batshit and nasty it became. I knew it was bad but not really being in the fandom, I didn't realise it was *that* bad.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Same here. I wasn't in the HP fandom but had friends who were and even then I didn't know the full extent of the wank. She sounds kind of awful? I tried to read the first book out of curiosity but it was just... not good.

Reading this really makes me miss Fandom_Wank
All that awesome drama lost forever. :(

I only knew of her by reputation because I wasn't active in the HP fandom. I don't think the criticism she has received as a writer is always fair, though. A lot of it tends to come with, "...this is significant because she [XYZ] in the HP fandom when she wrote [fanfic]."

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Criticism of her pro fic is the perfect time to bring up her fandom transgressions - she was a bully, a cheat, and a liar. She plagiarised and was never apologetic for it.

I have never and will never read her profic and I actively discourage others from doing so.

It wasn't because she wrote fanfic, it was her behaviour.

Man, whenever I think about Cassie Clare, I think about how astoundingly HUUUUGE HP fandom was back then. Because she was a classic BNF, yet she and her clique were barely a blip on my radar. And I was a Harry/Draco shipper. I mean, I knew about her trilogy, but it wasn't my thing, and I didn't know about any of the wank until the epic Ms. Scribe tell-all dropped. What a summer to be in fandom that was!

I often wonder if any fandom will ever be that huge again. I don't think so. That was a rare confluence of new technology and a phenomenally popular piece of media that was in the process of being released both in book and movie form. It was an amazing fandom and an amazing era to be part of.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything is fandom now, which means that nothing is fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point, now a movie drops, or a season drops on Netflix, and everyone binges it and goes fannish for it for like 2 months and then moves on to something else. There isn't that extended momentum like we had with HP in the 2000s, where we spent literally years having something to speculate about and look forward to. I guess Star Wars and the superhero movies are the closest thing to that now.

Oh my god, that Ms. Scribe write-up. That brings me back. I miss those days.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Right?? It was about this time of year, too. It was summer, and we were all hot and between books and had all the free time, and BAM. Epic drama. What a gift.

That was my comment!

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Which makes this secret ironic. :P All good though.

FWIW, I really didn't mean that I still cared about the drama. Just that I remember it and it makes me snort a bit when people mention her.

I miss journalfen.net :/

For years after it was gone my hands would automatically type "journalfen.net" looking for it. I don't even want to talk about wank anymore, but there were some fun people there.

Hell, I still haven't had the heart to delete my bookmarks folder of f_w and its associated comms. It's not that I harbor any hope of journalfen coming back, it's more of a private memorial.

I had a glancing relationship with E.L. James (was on a thread about her work that she frequented) and I still use that as cred to backup what an utter bitch she was.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I know people who still froth at the mouth when her name is mentioned. Personally I missed all her fandom nonsense and don't read the type of books she writes, but I went to the movie of The Mortal Instruments for the cast and really enjoyed it. I was sorry it didn't do better.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I came into fandom just after her drama, but to this day I refuse to read or watch anything of hers. I tell people about the drama why they ask my reasons.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a moderator on the Harry Potter fanfiction.net forum (back when they briefly had forums) and had to post the explanation of why her fics were suddenly deleted.

I got so many death threats 0_0

cassie clare wank always makes me giddy with nostalgia because it's such a ridiculous and encompassing tale of ridiculousness. i started being a part of fandom right as cassie clare left (2005ish) so i barely missed interacting with her in some way.
