Re: Fandom Confessions

There's a new series I got into recently, that for the life of me I don't understand the fandoms narrative for, and not for lack of trying. I feel like an infant with one of those toys where you push a block through a like-shaped hole, but all I have is a circle, and the only shape I can see is a square. Like maybe if I squint, shave the sides, shove a little harder, it might all fall into place, but it just doesn't. I feel like I'm missing a Tolstoy length novel worth of character development and interactions because it seems like every single individual person in that fandom has the exact same views, and I don't have a clue where they came from. That, by canon standards, aren't even close to being accurate.
What bothers me most is that this should be my thing. The tiniest of minor characters are always my favourite, and I've always had a thing for random/barest interaction type of ships, but this is on another level, and it honestly pisses me off that I can't see where it all comes from.
These characters basically don't exist, half of them I'm sure are just made up, and I feel like I'm studying for the S.A.T's just trying to put it all together. It doesn't help that 99% of fics are high school/university AU's where everyone has a happy backround, (something literally against canon) and they're all just /so/ happy to be together! It doesn't help that most of my fandom interaction is through these fics, so while the series has been revamped (not really) recently, it's not big/recent enough that I feel like I can just ask. I'm too afraid of warding anyone off with my frustrations. So I'm sitting here, pulling my hair out, because there's really so much potential for this series, I just can't seem to find it.
