Just realized this is the guy from the Hobbit. He's attractive here.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-01 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
OT: I'm so used to thinking of him as the guy from Pushing Daisies (or even the guy from The Fall) that it's actually weird to me seeing someone refer to him as "the guy from the Hobbit."

NAYRT - He's the brother from Wonderfalls for me lol.
philstar22: (Thor Yes!)

Hmmmm, yes. I've never seen him not attractive in anything. He's just fine. And he's very fine here. I may nee to watch this.

Warning from the OP of this secret, it's a good film, but VERY tragic, so... if that's not your thing, be warned!

I agree that it's unfortunate that insisting on trans actors being cast in trans stories will result in some films not being made or funded. But I think the responsibility for that should be laid at the feet of the film industry, the studios, and the financiers who choose not to make those films.

OP here, and I totally agree. I don't think they realize how important it is that these films get made (properly), how important it is that these stories reach people.

YES. I loved this movie, even though the story was so horrifically sad and terrible.
I'm glad it was made, I wish an actual transgender actor had been cast.

I don't think it was a blockbuster or anything, so to be honest, having a 'name' in this movie didn't do all that much for it. Maybe I'm wrong.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it was Lee's first movie (and it was made for TV), and I don't recall anyone else in the film being big name either.

When I looked it up after watching (and found out it was a true story T__T) apparently it looks like the real Calpernia was involved? There's pics of her and Lee together on IMDB at least.

I think Jake Gyllenhal (however you spell that) was in it?

Yes, I saw that. I was so horrified when I discovered it was real. I felt so sad for the soldier but also for Calpernia herself; so unfair and heartbreaking.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, not that I can see?

I knoooow! The movie made me cry, and then I like, doubled down on that horror when I realized it was real. My heart just broke for the real Calpernia, having to go through that, and the soldier.

OH! No, you're right. The guy who plays the soldier looks superficially like him, and it's been a while, so....

YES. It was horrifying for both Calpernia and Barry, just...fucked up.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's a man dressing as a woman so... doesn't really matter if the actor calls themselves trans or not.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? Sure it does. What do you mean, it doesn't matter?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT is either a terf, a troll, or both. Probably both.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
haha same thoughts here

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
You're probably trolling but... if a transwoman plays the role, they are not a man playing a woman...

(Anonymous) 2019-07-02 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I fucking loved this movie, but it's so damn sad I can never watch it again. Lee Pace was amazing.
