You know, there was a Mrs. Columbo.

Not exactly what you're talking about, but based on Columbo's wife, a reporter, solving crime. Kate Columbo was played by Kate Mulgrew. It was not that well received, either by audiences or the original Columbo producers.

It is very sad that I remember this at all - I don't actually know how I do, as I wasn't into Columbo and was way too young to watch Mrs. Columbo.

in fact, the show went over so badly with Columbo fans that they changed the character's name to Kate Callahan, making it sound like she divorced Columbo and married Dirty Harry!

I saw one episode of that. It was pretty bad.

tvtropes' article about mrs columbo used to contain the phrase "we suspect drugs were involved" every other line before that website disappeared up its own arse

I've never seen it but I read that they kept desperately trying to re-tool the show over the relatively short time it was on, changing the title and everything, but it just didn't work and probably made things very confusing for anyone who actually was watching it.
