I play games and I don't know who any of those people are unless they do something offensive and people start talking about it. But I don't really get in much discussion about games on the internet. If I did I'd probably have to encounter them.

(It also probably helps that I play the kind of games "real gamers" tend to scoff at, like Pokemon and what-have-you.)

OP: I sort of feel that "Gamer" is more akin to "trekkie" or "potterhead" than "person who plays games."
