Exactly. Realizing that would also mean not thinking that wanting your country to be better means "Hate your country and shame everyone in it for existing and especially for celebrating the 4th of July."

Personally I don't think those things, though I can understand why people who have seen the worst that America has to offer would. I admit I had difficulty celebrating yesterday because of the condition of our country right now. But we can do better. Our ideals are good (mostly). The image that has been sticking in my mind is the Statue of Liberty and the quote on the plaque there. That's the ideal America that I believe in. That's the America I want to fight for in the courts and online and with everything I say and write.

I don't hate America. I hate parts of what we are right now. I hate the genuinely evil things our government is currently doing. But I have hope because I believe that we can do better.
