Writing well is a skill like anything else that takes time. But even in my sugar high crackfic days where characterization was not a priority and I wrote in script format, my fics from first draft to publication took a week. I know some great artists that can go from rough draft to finished product in hours.

I'm one of the seemingly few people in fandom that writes for my own enjoyment and for what I want to read and the "begging" used to annoy me, too. But if there's been any good aspect about joining Tumblr, I've gotten to see more of fandom outside my own niche and learned how many people stopped writing because of how little feedback they received on their stories. There's so many other factors destroying fandom at the seams these days and this is literally the easiest thing we can all correct.

My philosophy about fanfic is, yes, I write for myself and my own enjoyment, but I actually put the stories out there on the internet for the fandom community. Community implies give and take. You want a story? The least you can do is leave a comment. (Hits do nothing for me, and while kudos are OK, they're still pretty meh, IMO. For all I know, your finger slipped and you accidentally pressed the button.) It's far easier and less time-consuming for the stories to stay in my head or even on my own computer, but I like being a member of a group of like-minded fans enjoying things together. I try not to publicly "beg" for comments, but I do occasionally let it be known that my rate of production is directly incentivized by people commenting on my fics. It's not fun to post in a vacuum, and I'm an adult with lots of other responsibilities and interests so I'm not going to bother posting if I'm not having fun with it.

For some reason, it's perfectly acceptable to say you want feedback or even money for other forms of fanart, but the moment you express a desire for feedback on fic, to some people, you're an entitled asshat. That's BS, and I will always call people out for expressing that opinion.

Yeah, like when the hell did we get to this? I remember far more people were annoyed with this ten years ago, but we should've nipped that in the bud back then.
