I have this issue with HP fics as well. I think I want to read a fic where we see all 7 years through Ron's eyes, but there are so many of those and they can range from being well written to being poorly written. You get ones that try to stay within canon to the books and you get ones that turn into their own AU stories. It's a bit overwhelming.

I get the urge to read HP fic but I can never pinpoint what KIND. I know the ship, but beyond that, I can't figure out what I'm in the mood for. And I end up opening a bunch of fic and going "nah".

Lots of rec blogs use tags so maybe scroll the tags and see what strikes you? Like “time travel” or “vampires” or “muggle AU” for general content?

I know exactly what you mean. When I read HP fic I usually just read fic for one not super popular pairing. Keeps my choices limited.
