but I think there are people in the world who do genuinely and sincerely care about representation

Of course there are, but I'm talking about fandom culture on tumblr. Most tumblrinas who ship two men and claim "creators should make my OTP canon because LGBT representation matters!!" almost unequivocally do not give an actual shit about representation and really only just want their OTP canon. They prove this time and time again when creators choose to make characters who aren't in their OTP gay and the shippers flip out in rage and disappointment.
