Me too. Some of the fandoms that I have the best early memories of (both canon and fandom) became so wanky I can't watch them without surfacing all the bad memories of what they turned into.

Yeah.

There are times where fandom only enhanced my enjoyment of canon and I remember them fondly. But when it gets bad, it can get so bad, and the memory stains the canon/characters for a while. I wasn't always able to pick up when to drop a fandom.

I never got too deep into the fandom, but I still remember the “secret episode” BS that came after the series finale. Shit was crazy. For what it’s worth, I’m rewatching Sherlock now and knowing about the wank doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the show.

I only watch season 1 and 2 again. I'm reminded that I was excited at the time for season 3, which ended up being a mistake.

Yeah, sometimes when I know there's going to be fan crazy (e.g. the Thirteenth Doctor, the final two Avengers movies) I just opt out of fandom entirely. But it's much worse when the fandom starts off fun and then goes to hell before you realise.

I think people got too caught up in their headcanon with 'Sherlock' and just started harassing anyone who didn't agree with their interpretation.

I made the mistake on Tumblr of saying I liked Irene Adler, fortunately, they never found out that I don't ship Sherlock & John...

I was never in the fandom much despite loving the show, so at first I was just blissfully unaware of any wank, but towards the end that became impossible. Even without being on tumblr or going looking for any of this stuff I still heard about it. It was embarrassing, like I couldn't admit ever having watched the show without a disclaimer that I wasn't in the fandom much, wasn't part of the weird shenanigans where people were flaming each other over who should top in the Johnlock ship, didn't think there was a secret extra episode, etc. I ca still watch it fine, but I get what you mean.
