Who cares?

If I waited for a character who was "meaningfully like me", I wouldn't watch or read anything.

I wonder if OP is holding out for a character "exactly" like them?

I'm the other way, I guess: as long as there's something in the character I can connect to (and there usually is, especially in the flawed ones) then I'm in.

The secret doesn't say op's doing that, though.

Same. There've only been two characters ever that I can think of that I identified with even the slightest bit out of all the media I've ever watched/read. There'd be nothing for me to watch/read if I only wanted characters like me.

Yep. I don't see why a character being "like you" matters anyway, because the story is about the character, not you? That's part of the appeal of media, to be able to experience things through the eyes of characters who aren't at all like you.

I'm not sure the point behind this. At first I assumed it was in response to the common "I love this character because they are just like me!" But I'm not sure if it's actually a "I can't like characters because they aren't like me" or if both of those are way off.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The former

Unless you are the OP, how can you know?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't say either one. Why do we have to assume something that isn't there?

I am so excited about the upcoming movie Blibded By the Light! The main character is a different gender, race, and nationality from me, but in the 1980s Bruce Springsteen SPOKE to us both. I have never related to a character so much in my LIFE.

*Blinded

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't want to see characters like me. I'm boring. I want to see exciting people* doing exciting things!

*I do like to see a wide range of people getting to do exciting things, not just all white men all the time, but it's not because I relate to them better, it's because identikit heroes and villains are boring.

In what ways would you like to see a character like you, OP?
