Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:46 am (UTC)(link)Well, for example, if someone said they hated a character because she was a slut or because she didn't stay in the kitchen. Obviously those are very extreme examples but hopefully they give you an idea what my point is - of course in reality it's not going to be clear cut, it's a subject of considerable debate, etc.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)Ah, ok, yeah, that makes sense. I tend to dislike characters in general for the same reasons regardless of gender (and the same reasons I dislike people in real life tbh), mainly when they just treat other characters horribly for no reason, they're overly judgey of people who are maybe weird but not hurting anyone else, etc. And a lot of it is down to the writing. A character can do something awful without me hating them if they're developed enough that I understand their motivations and can see that they're complex and human with reasons for doing the things they do, who make mistakes like everyone does. If they just seem to be assholes for no reason, I'm more likely to hate them, which I know is largely due to the writing. Like, sometimes I KNOW the writers are being lazy and clearly manipulative and they obviously want the audience to hate a character, so they just make them over the top ridiculously evil and I shouldn't fall for it but sometimes they're just such jerks I can't help but hate them anyway.
