I never liked Evangelion when I was a kid, but now I’m curious to rewatch it and see if my feelings towards it change.

Sooo much this. The first time I watched, Shinji annoyed the shit out of me. Always whining, always pathetic, always so awful.

Now, though, I get it. I totally get it. And I feel for him.

SAME. Looking back on it, he's so relatable that it's almost painful. He's an amazing protagonist and I hate how people are so quick to dismiss him or label him "annoying" without taking a moment to stop and think about his circumstances, because we've ALL been Shinji at some point in our lives.

I didn't watch this until I was an adult, but I saw all the jokes and memes about him being useless and whiny. When I finally actually watched it...good LORD, why were there so many jokes? His life SUCKS. No wonder he's depressed.

Honestly I really think it's 90-95% the legacy of mecha anime dorks and the way that they specifically talked about the series

I saw this in 2002 back in High School and not once I've thought that Shinji annoyed me. I just feel so bad for him and the shit he goes through.

Same here! I didn't understand why there were so many people dissing Shinji. He's got an enormous amount of pressure on him, his mother is dead, his father is Literally The Worst, and he get traumatized on the regular fighting hell demons from outer space.
