There's a lot of reasons why an actor being the wrong age for a roll can be a bummer. The viewer not finding them hot is one reason, sure, but it's definitely not the only reason.

My number one reason for making a "wrong age" criticism is that the character dynamic is sometimes quite different if the character is 10+ years older/younger than they were intended to be.

If forced to choose between a great actor who's the wrong age, or a mediocre actor who's the right age, of course I'll choose the great actor. But it's not necessarily an either or situation. Ideally the casting director casts someone who is both a really good actor and the right age for the role.
